Day in the Life

after a hard days work
Hey there! I have been busy busy- and have had no time for writing ambitious blog posts! Today I thought I'd just keep things simple, and share a peek into my day making Fat and the Moon.

Yurt Life

We've moved to a magical place called Oz- no, I have not been bonked on the head and transported via a twister. Oz Farm y'all! Of the Mendocino coast! My partner Jesse is the farm manager in training of a beautiful organic farm with an espalier apple orchard. We live snug as bugs in a couple solar powered yurts tucked under the redwoods. It's been amazing to make potions in the light flooded yurt, warmed by the wood stove. Jesse is a wood crafter extraordinaire and built sturdy shelving for our many jarred things.

There is much to do on the house and surrounding garden, not to mention the farm- but we are  dedicated to the project. I'm hoping to host a many workshops on herbalism, herbal body care and natural dyes starting in spring.  I'll be back in Oakland from time to time as Fat and the Moon is still going strong in the bay with the help of my bud, Rebecca (check her out at the Mission Community Market in SF). I'll be doing some workshops, so stay tuned for dates.

Where I've been and what I've been up to

I'm back from my time away in the Catskills where I was doing an artist residency at the Shandaken Project. It was a ball! Got down to work and soaked up the place. One of the projects I worked on while I was there is part of an ongoing project making medicinal sleeping clothing. At Shandaken, I dyed clothes for my fellow residents using the medicinal plants growing on the property.

I met with each artist and then dyed their clothing with plants mirroring their needs. Lucky for me, there was quite a selection of herbs, St John's Wort, yarrow, barberry, elder berry to name a few. Also got to make some medicinal undies!  Thanks Stephen, Nick, Math and Alex!

Dye Job

Spent the day dying with home grown medicinal plants and experimenting with techniques and recipes. It was such a pleasure to harvest our comfrey, yarrow, sorrel root and cabbage and see them shine in a whole other way!
More experiments and results to come.

Solstice Splendor

My dear and talented friends were in town for an epic visit and much sun and fun was had. Soul sister Lani Bouwer gifted us with taking photos of our yard in it's summer bounty. Lani is also responsible for the new Fat and the Moon Etsy photos! Much love and thanks lady! Check out more of her work here...
